HMAS Adelaide to be sunk off NSW - 8 February

HMAS Adelaide is set to be sunk off Terrigal, on the Central Coast of New South Wales, creating an artificial reef for divers and surfers to enjoy.

Member for Dobell Ken Ticehurst said the sinking of the escort frigate would provide the central coast with a place on the itinerary of globe-trotting divers.

"The HMAS Adelaide will open the door to a unique international tourism market and will attract divers from all over the world to the central coast," Mr Ticehurst said.

Can you recommend other similar sites, since this one is still several months away from being begun (and I would guess even longer away from being interesting diving in terms of becoming a “reef.”)? My fiancé and I are trying to sort out now where we will honeymoon next spring. She’s been pushing for Italy, which I think is the result of her having seen Under the Tuscan Sun too many times. Australia sounds nice to me, though. I’ve done some diving here in America, but nothing very spectacular. My one problem will be convincing her to give it a try. Between Open Water, and her pretty much sheer terror of sharks in general, I’m not sure how I’m going to get her out there, much less in Australia. But maybe if I could tempt her with a cool site, it would help my case.

This is a bit of a 'girly' story, but it was just how I felt after our dive yesterday at Stradbroke Island. I have been diving since 1981 and instructing since 2000 and have found that I never, ever get bored with the wonderful world under the waves!
