Underwater

Wondering if Underwater Australasia has an actual 'place' beyond the Cyber and wonder if it is more than just a shop and club...thinking more like a 'world'.?? P.S. I thought we were all Oceanians rather than 'South' Asians? I'm sure those in Asia don't want to be Borealasians...just to equalise.

We have a base in Byron Bay - by the way one of the top spots to dive in Australia :-)

As you can read in the about us section, we also run a Divers Retreat in Byron called Planula (http://www.planula.com.au) and we are the organisers of the annual Byron Underwater Festival (http://www.underwaterfestival.com.au) - next one is from 30 April 2008.

Regarding the name ... you do have a point but we didn't like the term Oceania for a number of reasons. One is historical, this website started as being Australia specific and expanded to cover the wider region after we received many requests about information from those places. Second, Oceania actually does not include the South East Asian Countires we cover such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania

The best term would avtually be underwater asia pacific - but that seemed a bit long, plus we do not cover China, Japan, Korea etc ..

So we took the approach of the regional dive magazines - Scuba Diver Australasia, Dive Log Australasia and Sportdiving Australasia.

Sorry for the long winded explanation - but also thanks for asking :-)

See you underwater ...

Tim

Thankyou Tim, Strong possibility of being up there for the Festival next year. Good point on the 'geographical'. I know a lot of businesses that express Australiasia (South Asia) and mainly focus on the Asian market starting with the South-East Asia of the Indo-Malay region. You could really see five different labels. Maybe 'Oceaniasia' might assimilate the regions a bit? I like Oceania from a 'diver' point of view. All in all, if Australia were to change its flag, I'm sure a name change is in order for we would no longer be 'South' of anyone (eg:UK). Merlandis quickly comes to mind but I'm sure there are more. Certainly look forward to enjoying Julian Rocks and Byron Bay. Jasonic
